Description: Sears is one of the great business stories of the 1990s. When Arthur Martinez became the first outsider to become CEO he faced a daunt challenge. The company that had once conquered retailing had degenerated into a collection of dismal stores and disheartened employee losing a mind-boggling $4 billion in 1992.

The first turnaround came quickly and Martinez, after making some gut-wrenching decisions (e.g., killing the Sears catalog) restored Sea to profitability by 1994. That transformation sailed along until 1997 when Sears was again hit with a series of huge challenges: soft grow and profits, ethical questions, the rise of online retailing and all that it implies for an old economy retailer like Sears. How Martinez and team worked his way through these challenges provides a vivid, readable book of lessons for people in all businesses.

By the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000 Sears was once again restored to health, but its story will remain a continuing saga of the challenges of running a business in the new millennium: the need for ever-continuing transformation in the face of a rapidly changing business environment.
