Description:
Basing his work on 1993-94 interviews with, and personality measures of, 110 first-term members of the Lower House of the Japanese Diet (parliament), Feldman (social psychology and politics, Naruto U, of Education; Tokushima, Japan) studies their political ambitions and levels of dogmatism, self-esteem, and self-complexity-in the context of the end of the Liberal (actually conservative) Democratic Party's long monopoly. Data was also gathered from a control sample. While just like their Western counterparts the Japanese politician turns out to be more ambitious, educated, and interested in political matters than other citizens, the author concludes that the cultural value placed on groupthink must be taken into account in viewing the Japanese political personality.
