Description:
It's a tradition in the city room of The Herald for journalists to die at their desks, having worked, and smoked, and imbibed themselves into the grave. On these occasions the behavior required by the dead man's colleagues -- a group of cynical old newshounds -- is to applaud, hailing their fallen comrade. William Colfax is asked to join the city room's staff barely a minute after the body of his predecessor has been carted away.
Expand description
The Last City Room depicts the decline of The Herald, an influential newspaper in San Francisco, during the turbulent '60s. As the conservatism of the old guard, led by The Herald's publisher, clashes with the radical liberal leaders ascending to power in the city, Colfax struggles to maintain his independence and integrity as a journalist. The Last City Room is an evocation of a time when the country's social fabric was forever changed.
