Like Lawhead's Byzantium, the Celtic Crusades series is historical in nature, rather than fantasy or science fiction. It examines military and ecclesiastical history within the dramas of family life and clan wealth, set against a backdrop of the declining Holy Roman Empire and its ruinous wars with the Saracen East. Each of the three books centers on one of three periods of Crusades history as well as one significant relic: The Iron Lance features the spear that pierced Christ's side; The Black Rood, the cross itself.
The Mystic Rose, the final book in the series, follows the adventures of the descendants of Murdo Ranulfson in the search for that most holy of relics, the grail.
