Guided by the goddess Athene, Odysseus circumvents the wrath of Poseidon to overcome an incredible array of obstacles, including a literal descent into Hell, and a fantastic cast of adversaries: the hedonistic Lotus-eaters; the one-eyed giant known as Cyclops; the enchantress Circe, who amuses herself by transforming men into animals; plus cannibals, sirens, and many other monstrous creatures.
