For at least 1,000 years before Europeans arrived, the Pomo Indians lived in villages in the moderate coastal climate of northern California. They hunted game, fished, and gathered wild foods. Among their crafts, basketry was paramount, and Promo baskets are admired around the world today. Spaniards, Mexicans, and then Americans brought diseases, bad government, land confiscation, and near slavery that reduced the Pomo to scattered groups that controlled almost no land. Recent government policy has reversed many harmful practices, and now Pomo-owned gaming casinos have brought funds that greatly help the Pomo community and its members.
