Description:
The Songhay Empire conquered the key trading, cities on the southern edge of the Sahara desert during Emperor Sunni Ali's reign (1464-92). The empire grew to become one of the greatest states ever seen in West Africa. It had efficient systems of government, justice, agriculture, trade, and industry, and famous universities. Its army, more powerful than those of European countries at that time, controlled the region until the empire was defeated by Morocco in 1591.
