Description: "The United Statest at War: The Civil War" is a riveting presentation that examines in authoritative, dramatic detail one of history's most profound military conflicts.

At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, Confederate forces fired upon a small Union garrison at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Thus began the Civil War-- America's bloodiest war-- during which twice as many Americans died as in World War II.

But the changes wrought in American Government were as significant as the war's casualties. America became one nation, under a strong executive power-- an executive that could draft, tax, impose military law, and suspend cherished legal protections, such as habeas corpus. Ours became a nation that the founding fathers scarcely would have recognized. No more was America a confederation of sovereign states; it was one nation under God.

Not simply a presentation of military history, "The United Statest at War: The Civil War" provides an overview of the political, economic and social forces that erupted in military conflict during the war, offering an illuminating look at the most epic internal conflict in American history.
