This is Ned Kelly's story, in his own words and written on the run. The son of Irish immigrants, he was considered a thief and murderer by the authorities; to most Australians, though, he was the persecuted scapegoat of English landlords and their agents. Executed more than a century ago, he resonates still as that country's most potent legend.
With his brother and two friends, Kelly evaded a massive police manhunt for 20 months, augmenting his bush-whacking genius with bank robberies and widespread populist support. His sole demand -- for which, in exchange, he would have surrendered -- was his jailed mother's freedom. (She served out her sentence in the same Melbourne prison where her son was hanged.)
Peter Carey has created, in fact, a classic "Western", with a historical figure of mighty travails and exploits speaking as if from the grave. And if this mythic outlaw is part Jesse James, part Nat Turner, in this masterful novel he is chiefly a man in full, whose life transcends all borders and embodies tragedy, perseverance, and freedom.
