Description:
The rapid growth of electronic commerce, along with changes in information, computing, and communications, has had a profound effect on the United States economy. Understanding and documenting that effect, however, presents an array of challenges. In response, then-president Clinton directed the National Economic Council and the executive branch agencies to consider new types of data collection and research that might be undertaken by public and private organizations to aid analysis of the economic impact of the Internet and electronic commerce domestically and internationally.
Expand description
This book contains work developed in response to that directive. The goal is to assess current research on the digital economy, to engage the private sector in developing the research that informs investment and policy decisions, and to promote better understanding of the growth and socioeconomic implications of information technology and electronic commerce. The book is organized into four parts: the macroeconomic perspective; market structure, competition, and the role of small business; employment, workforce, and access; and organizational change.
