Description: Whether or not they have actually visited there, many Americans regard San Francisco and the entire Bay Area as familiar territory. Few cities can claim the instantaneous association with Victorian that is enjoyed by San Francisco. This is not simply due to the large number of polychrome Victorian houses that are immortalized in Penguin Putnam's four Painted Ladies books; instead, it is the cumulative visual impact of all types of Victorian architecture to be found there, and which are discussed and illustrated -- both exteriors and interiors -- in the seven chapters and 260 color plates of this invaluable book. It is a grand parade of styles -- Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Stick/Eastlake, Queen Anne, Colonial and Classical Revival, and Shingle. In addition, there are sections devoted to Victorian House Planning, the Edwardian Era, Before and After Transformations, and Victorian Revival Interiors.
