Description: WORDS, a decoding & spelling curriculum meant to supplement literature based & whole language instruction, is based on the premise that decoding & spelling instruction should be supported by a reflective understanding of the structure of English orthography grounded in the history of the language. The curriculum contains 5 units & 50 integrated decoding & spelling lessons based on word origin (Anglo-Saxon, Latin, & Greek) & word structure (letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, & morpheme patterns - roots, prefixes, & suffixes). Teachers provide direct instruction in problem-solving small group discussions. Students begin by reviewing & organizing letter-sound correspondences & then learn syllable & morpheme patterns useful for reading & spelling long, unfamiliar words. Students gain a technical vocabulary to talk about decoding concepts, & they also learn alternative strategies to analyze long, unfamiliar words. Both decoding & spelling achievement increase significantly based on research studies & teacher report. The book also includes a pre-test for word structure knowledge, unit quizzes, content area word lists, non-phonetic word list, & spelling rules. WORDS is designed for use in regular classrooms (grades 3-9) & in classes for learning handicapped students, grades 5-adult.
