While there is relatively little known about family interventions within HIV-infected populations, Working With Families in the Era of HIV/AIDS provides a spectrum of programs to prevent the spread of the disease and its consequences. The prevention programs are intended to promote greater responsibility in general, thus encouraging healthier lifestyles among family members. Together with some of the nation's most capable behavioral prevention and treatment scientists, members of the National Institute of Mental Health Consortium on Families and HIV/AIDS have prepared this book by building on their own research and practical experience. Based on sound scientific principles, these prevention programs are currently being tested in rigorous controlled trials across the country. They have received rigorous peer review by independent scientists and were considered worthy of research support. A large portion of the programs presented within this book were designed for the African American population; however, these interventions can be adapted for use with other cultural groups, as well as other chronic diseases, STDs, and multiple family configurations.
