As he stepped to the plate at Yankee Stadium on Opening Day in1966, Bobby Murcer Carried with him the hopes and expectations of Yankees fans looking for thenext Mickey Mantle. There were interesting similarities---both were from Oklahoma, both came up to the majors as shortstops, both were converted to centerfielders and both debuted at age 19. Murcer (1946-2008) played for the Yankees from 1965 through 1974 (he missed 67 and 68 on military duty), played for the Giants and the Cubs and returned to the Bronx 1979-83. He would later go on to a stellar career in the Yankees broadcast booth.
