After the illustrious, all-powerful wizard Susnam Evyndd loses a huge battle against an evil clan of sorcerous gnomes, the world is plunged into darkness. Unless someone can reverse the gnomish magic, first plants will die off from lack of sun, and then everything and everyone else will follow. Evyndd's last spell turns out to be a post-mortem, last-gasp backup plan which goes into effect after his body is laid in state at his own home. The spell transmogrifies his household pets, including cats, dogs, a bird, and a boa constrictor, into humans, and a set of instructions from Evyndd found in the house charges the motley group with the task of returning light to the world.

Through much bickering and frustration -- it's difficult to learn to walk on only two legs, after all -- the group sets out only to be shadowed by an evil Quoll who's been sent to try to thwart their quest. As for the transmogrified humans, while they retain certain qualities from their feral origins, they also find that, though not wizards themselves, they've been given special gifts to help their way.
