Description: Alanna and her twin brother, Alan, secretly change places as they are sent away from home for training: she is determined to ignore her magical powers and become a knight, while he wants to become a sorcerer, not a knight. In In the Hand of the Goddess (1984; pap., 1990), Alanna has reached the level of squire to Prince Jonathan when she becomes suspicious that a sorcerer, Duke Roger, is plotting against the royal family. In The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (1986; pap., 1990) Alanna, now a knight, proves her prowess as a warrior by aiding a tribe of desert raiders, who declare her their shaman. Lioness Rampant (1988; pap., 1990) completes the series, and Wild Magic: The Immortals (1992) is set in the same world. Recommended.
