There is a legend that one born with the claw mark of the god Ba'el across his face will be the Champion of Domdur and lead them to victory over all enemies. Born to a smith in a small village, Malledd is so marked at birth.

But there are no enemies anymore and the people -- including Malledd himself -- doubt the existence of a chosen Champion. As he grows to manhood, he insists that becoming an ordinary smith is good enough for him.

As the oracles fall silent, the people grow fearful and word comes of a terrible force unleashed in the dark hills of the North Country. A dark magician has gathered an army of the undead and is on his way to challenge the Empire. An Imperial Army is quickly gathered, but will the Champion lead them? Will he answer his call? Or will the Empire fall because of one man's refusal to be anything other than normal?
