Mertz (1927–2013) was an American author and Egyptologist recognized for her impactful work in both academic and popular literature. Writing under the pen names Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels, she created the highly regarded Amelia Peabody mystery series and gothic thrillers. Known for her well-drawn female protagonists and richly detailed archaeological settings, Mertz received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 1998.
