Blue as a polished turquoise, the sky stretched above its gleaming palaces, gorgeous temples, and splendid avenues. Above the delicate gray-green of the tamarisk showers and the waving feathery tops of the date palms just coming into bloom, towered the massive Pylons of the Temple of Amen-Ra. On either side, silent, vast and unchanging, sat the image of the god, the great hands, with sculptured fingers straight and close-set, held stiffly on the knees, the wide, stone eyes gazing into that impenetrable future whose secrets the gods alone may know. Before them, two obelisks reared their tall heads skyward, catching on their summits the golden light of the great Ra, whose rays they symbolized.
