Description:
This volume continues the publication of the Soviet writer Alexander Volkov's Oz-inspired "Magic Land" cycle of children's novels. The two offered here comprise the third & fourth in the series of six, & are appearing in English for the first time. THE SEVEN UNDERGROUND KINGS is about the inhabitants of an immense cavern beneath Magic Land; they are governed by seven kings who rule them in turn, a month at a time, & those not actually ruling are generally put to sleep between reigns (along with their hungry retinues) by means of some magical water, to conserve the cavern's resources. Chaos results when the spring producing the water goes dry... In the second story, Urfin Jus, villain of TALES OF THE MAGIC LAND 1, makes a second bid for power, this time using an ordinary cigarette-lighter to pass himself off as a god to the Marran people, who are so primitive that they do not even have fire, & he molds their menfolk into a mighty army & attacks the Emerald City... Both stories are very popular in the former Soviet Union, & deserve the same popularity here! Order from Red Branch Press, P.O. Box 120221, Eltingville, Sta., Staten Island, NY 10312-0006.
